Homestead Child Care Facility
BACKGROUND
Located in the
cool climes of Stony Hill, St Andrew, Homestead Child Care Facility
is situated on approximately two (2) acres of land; and, caters exclusively
to the needs of girls remanded to the facility for care and protection;
uncontrollable behaviour; and/or on criminal charges.
A Government of
Jamaica operated facility, this home has the capacity to accommodate
sixty (60) girls between the ages of ten (10) and eighteen (18) years
old.
Formerly a home
for boys, the facility closed its doors for refurbishing in September
2004. Homestead reopened in June 2005, to sixty (60) girls who were
transferred from Glenhope Child Care Facility.
PROGRAMMES
While at Homestead,
girls are exposed to a variety of educational, vocational and social
activities geared toward their rehabilitation and empowerment. Girls
attend classes on the compound of the facility Mondays through Friday
and, are actively engaged in pursuits such as:
- Woodwork
- Sewing
- Food and Nutrition
- Social Studies
- Geography
- Religious knowledge
- Mathematics
- English Language
- English Literature
Over the past
5 year, Homestead has enjoyed the support of civic and numerous other
volunteer and service organizations. Groups of volunteers visit the
home weekly to offer support to the girls in various ways. Family
members of wards are also encouraged to visit on weekends.
Homestead's mission
is to create a stable supportive and nurturing environment to girls
who have experience trauma in their lives by providing intervention
and rehabilitation that will ultimately build resilience and aid in
their resocialization.
