Muirton
Boys Home
Background
Located in the
parish of Portland, Muirton Child Care Facility is accommodated on
what is now part of a former great house which encompassed 29 acres
of land. The Home was established in 1978 with a contingent of thirty
(30) boys.
It caters exclusively
to the needs of boys between the ages of eleven (11) and eighteen
(18) and has the capacity to accommodate thirty (30). However, it
currently houses 27 boys, some of whom are mentally and physically
challenged.
Programmes
The Home is partially
self-sufficient as it operates a farm where the boys are exposed to:
Animal raring
Poultry rearing
Crop cultivation
Eggs (reared and sold)
The boys attend
various schools in the surrounding community with the exception of
those who are mentally challenged. They are taught in-house by the
social aides.
Over the years
some of the boys have excelled academically by moving on to higher
level education where they obtain Bachelor and Masters Degrees.
Muirton's mission
is to create a stable supportive and nurturing environment to boys
who have experience trauma in their lives, by providing intervention
and rehabilitation that will ultimately build resilience and aid in
their re-socialization.
