Carrole Guntley, director general in the Ministry of Tourism, was among four awardees honoured by the Children of Jamaica Outreach (COJO) during its recent annual awards dinner in New York.
Guntley copped
the Tourism Partner Award for her "unfailing support" of
COJO, a non-profit organisation founded in New York City in 1994,
by Jamaican Gary Williams, with a mission to help improve the health,
education and well-being of less fortunate children.
Joining Guntley
on the 2011 awards list were Basil E. Higgins, who received the Community
Service Award, Eric Miller of the Brooklyn Bottling Group - the Visionary
Award, and Western Union - the Corporate Partner Award.
Williams, the
chairman of COJO, in congratulating the awardees, said, "It is
heartening to see companies and individuals still making a contribution
towards enhancing the future, our children, despite a challenging
economic environment."
Corporate praise
He had praise
too for corporate entities like JetBlue and several hotels in Jamaica
which donated airline tickets as raffle prizes at the event.
For more than
a decade, COJO has supported a number of institutions in Jamaica and
the United States. Among them the Alpha Boys' Home, Glenhope Place
of Safety, Marigold Child Care Centre, Musgrave Girls' Home, Summerfield
Boys' Home, Muirton Boys' Home and Windsor Girls' Home in Jamaica,
and in New York, the Jamaica Queens YMCA and Leaf of Life.
Jamaica's former
high commissioner to the United Kingdom, Burchell Whiteman, was the
guest speaker at the COJO dinner.
