Summerfield Residential Child Care Facility
The Summerfield Residential Child Care Facility is located in North
Central Clarendon in the district of Summerfield near Chapleton.
The facility began
operation in 1976 with 16 boys. The home now accommodates 45 boys
between the ages of nine to eighteen years of age who have been made
wards of the State deemed to be in need of Care and Protection.
The Summerfield
Residential Child Care Facility is owned and managed by the CDA which
an Executive Agency of the Government of Jamaica.
Efforts are made
to have all the boys enrolled in Community School and at present only
four (4) of the 45 boys do not attend school. The boys interact with
members of the community and attend church and related activities.
The boys maintain
contact with family members through telephones, letters and home visits.
Efforts are made to reintegrate the boys with their families once
they are willing and able to receive them.
There is a Computer
Lab and the boys are exposed to Information Technology classes and
utilize this to assist with their studies. The boys are involved in
small scale agriculture to meet some of their needs.
The facility is
served by staff consisting of a manager, social worker and other caregivers
who ensure that the needs of the children are met.
The objective
of the facility is to provide the environment to enhance the growth
and development of the boys so that the can realize their full potential
and contribute to nation building.
