Windward
Road Primary & Junior High School
The Windward Road Primary & Junior High School began in 1935 as
the Windward Road Elementary School. It was located at the St. Patrick's
Church of which it is an affiliate.
The school was later relocated to its present location at 141 Windward
Road. The school currently has a population of one thousand six hundred
and three (1603) students and a complement of sixty three (63) members
of staff including the Principal Mr. Norman Malcolm and two (2) Vice
- Principals.
As a Primary and
Junior High School, we admit students at the Grade one level up to
the grade nine level. Students attaining the Grade six level are entered
for an external examination; the Grade Six Achievement Test popularly
known as the GSAT where they are placed into High Schools and those
attaining the grade nine level do the Junior High exam which places
them at either traditional or Technical High Schools.
Students in the
Primary Department have a single teacher who teaches all areas such
as Mathematics, Social Studies, Religious Education, Language Arts
(English), Physical Education is taught by a specialist in that area.
In the Junior High Department, the subjects are taught by secondary
trained persons; these include Resource and Technology comprising
Wood and Metalwork, Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textile, Spanish,
Social Studies, Integrated Science, Music, Religious Education, Physical
Education, Language Arts, Mathematics, and Library Skills.
The school's motto
is "Only the best is good enough" and to this end we try
to achieve top honours in what we do. Our crowning glory was in 2006
when we won the Junior Schools' Challenge Trophy for the first time
after having placed third upon our first entry. The victory was again
repeated in 2007 when the trophy was successfully defended by defeating
Mona Preparatory School.
The schools boasts several accolades in the area of Sports among which
are:
1st place - Insport Basketball Rally 2004
2nd place - Insport Junior High Track and Field 2007 & 2008.
The school is
Alma Mater to distinguished personalities such as, Dr. Arnaldo Ventura,
Olympians; Keith Gardner and Donald Quarrie, Evangelist; Julius Creary,
Cricketer; Robert Haynes to name a few.
We aim to be the
premiere Primary and Junior High School in Kingston, if not Jamaica
and we are setting our sights on this goal which we hope to realize
in the next five to ten years.
